Plant Permits

When do I need a permit?

To collect plants
If you want to collect any part of any plant from the wild, you need to:
a. obtain a COLLECTING PERMIT from the province in which you wish to collect, and
b. obtain permission from the landowner (if the plant is on private land) or the nature conservation authority (if the plant is in a reserve, park or conservancy).

To transport plants
If you are planning to transport a plant, you'll need a permit if:
a. the plant appears on the protected list (see below) in the province in which you are travelling. If you are crossing provincial borders then you need permits from your province of origin and from each of the provinces you enter.

To own cycads in some provinces
Please contact your provincial authority to check local requirements - see list below.

Number of permits
If you plan to collect more than one plant species, you need a separate permit for each species you are collecting or transporting.

The following list provides lists of the protected plants in each province, as well as the details of whom to contact in order to obtain a permit. The lists and regulations are provided as .pdf files.

Trees
The National Forest Act and other legislation provides for the protection of trees. Click here to download a .pdf of tree protection legislation.
