Obtaining Material from the Library

This, the Kirstenbosch library, dates from 1913 when Kirstenbosch was founded. It is named after Harry Molteno, one of the founders of the Molteno Bros Trust who funded the building which houses the collection. The library forms part of the KRC (Kirstenbosch Research Complex).

Library Catalog and Holdings

The library has about 5 000 books, 750 journal/serial titles (of which about 200 are current) and a pamphlet collection of about 5 000 items.   It also maintains an index of approximately 14 000 journal articles about SA flora and related topics. We also have a few videos, CDs and microfiches.

All items are indexed in the catalogue. The catalog also contains details of books housed in 7 satellite libraries. We have been unable to submit our records to Magnet/Sabinet for the past 10 years, so SA librarians searching for environmental material are invited to check our catalog.
