Cape Philharmonic Orchestra: Carmina Burana

The Philharmonia Choir of Cape Town and the New Apostolic Church Children's Choir join the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra for a performance of the full Carmina Burana oratorio by Carl Orff conducted by Christopher Dowdeswell.
* Please note the charge for this concert is R45 for adults (Botanical Society members R30), R30 for students and R15 for children.

Gavin Minter

Fresh from recording his 5th album, this multi-talented singer, songwriter, composer, producer and saxophonist will be performing his beautiful covers of Joni Mitchell, Carole King, The Carpenters and Bob Marley, as well as some gentle folk and funky soul originals.

Karen Zoid

Karen Zoid honed her song writing and guitar playing skills as a busker on the street corners of Melville, Johannesburg. Since then she has gone on to win numerous awards for her first two albums, headline at most of the country's major festivals and be voted one of the 'Top 6 Rising Stars of South Africa' by the Sunday Times.

Loyiso

Past winner of the South African Music Award for Best Newcomer and Best R&B Album, Loyiso needs little introduction. His music is described as "R&B at its finest, with a slight Latino feel, and a distinctive soulful South African flava".

freshlyground

With their unique brew of indigenous African folk, jazz, soul, kwela and dance hall music, freshlyground are one of the most popular bands on the Appletiser Summer Sunset Concert programme. After a busy year recording their second album and performing at the opening of Parliament, the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Villa Celimontana Festival in Rome, they return to Kirstenbosch to perform "some of the freshest and funkiest pop since the heyday of Bright Blue and Mango Groove".

Flat Stanley

Within 10 days of forming over drinks at a friend's house party, this acoustic rock outfit went on to win the Annual Barleycorn Music Club Songwriting Competition with their song Rain. They were selected as one of Levi's® Original Music Artists for 2004 and have just launched their debut album Of Secrets and Wine.

Barry van Zyl & Nibs van der Spuy

Barry van Zyl, the well-known drummer/percussionist for Johnny Clegg teams up with guitarist and composer, Nibs van der Spuy of Landscape Prayers fame to perform original pieces from their collaborative album, Hadeda. Barry and Nibs will be joined by some of the special guests who appear on the CD; Stellenbosch bassist and composer Schalk Joubert, actress Jana Cilliers and vocalist Neo Muyanga of BLK Sonshine.

Junction (021)

This dynamic collective of nineteen of the most talented, young jazz performers in South Africa (average age 24) presents an exciting show of big band standards from the last 80 years. With a repertoire ranging from Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Frank Sinatra to today's Robbie Williams, they also enjoy providing a performance platform for original South African composers of Big Band Jazz.

INFORMATION

The charge for the Appletiser Summer Sunset Concerts at Kirstenbosch is R35 for adults, R25 for students (with student card) and R10 for children, inclusive of the garden entrance fee. Botanical Society members pay R25 for adults and R10 for children.

Concert tickets are available all day on Sundays. Garden visitors wishing to attend the concert later should purchase tickets. The concert fee is payable by all visitors after 4pm. Please retain your concert ticket in order to gain entry to the concert area.

Bring the family and a picnic, relax with a glass of wine and enjoy the best of local music while the sun slips behind the mountains. You are welcome to linger after the concert but please make sure to leave the Garden by 8pm and remember to take your litter home with you. The concert area is bin-free.

Appletiser products will be on sale at all the concerts.

Picnic hampers are available from the Silvertree Restaurant. It is advisable to pre-order hampers. Picnics will also be on sale at the concert venue. For more information or to order call (021) 762 9585.

Special parking is available for the physically disabled - enter the garden at the Rycroft Gate (top gate) and proceed to the workshop area off Camphor Avenue for parking.

Please note that no dogs or ball games are allowed in the Garden. Please keep children out of the flowerbeds and off the stage. Please also show consideration by not smoking in the audience or sitting on deckchairs that obstruct the view of the stage for others.

The programme is subject to alteration or cancellation without notice.

Remember that Kirstenbosch is generally protected from southeasterly winds. In the unlikely event of rain, a concert may have to be cancelled. The weather can vary considerably in different parts of the Peninsula, so if in doubt, please phone the Kirstenbosch Information Desk.
