GENERAL GARDEN TOURS

General guided tours of the Botanical Garden can be arranged for groups at a
cost of R140 per guide (with a maximum of 20 people per guide).

TREE IDENTIFICATION

Get to know the trees in the Walter Sisulu NBG. Karin Spottiswoode, who is a very knowledgeable guide, will lead this Tree ID walk around the Botanical Garden. Booking is essential.

INTRODUCTION TO GRASSES
Saturday 22 January
07h30 for 08h00 until 16h00

A one-day course on how to identify grasses presented by Andrew Hankey at the Nestlé Environmental Education Centre at the Botanical Garden. Andrew is a Specialist Horticulturist at the Walter Sisulu NBG and is a very knowledgeable and interesting lecturer.

FREE-ME WILDLIFE REHABILITATION PROGRAMME

A presentation and walk on medicinal plants with Marianna van Wyk, wife of Prof Ben-Erik van Wyk, author of the books “Medicinal Plants of SA” and “People's Plants”. Meet at the Nestlé Environmental Education Centre at the Botanical Garden. Book with Shanka.

A presentation and walk at Ruimsig Entomological Reserve (close to the Botanical Garden) with Peter Roos – Lepidopterist/Entomologist. Bring along a butterfly net. Booking essential.

Nocturnal Walk BIRDS, MAMMALS & FROGS
Saturday 19 February
18:00 for 18:30

A guided night walk in the Walter Sisulu NBG with Mike Reed, a very knowledgeable and interesting lecturer, who is involved in the Krugersdorp branch of “People for Wildlife” and who helps his son run wilderness safaris in Botswana. Snacks and refreshments will be proved prior to the Walk at the Nestlé Environmental Education Centre. Booking essential.

 

FUNGI
Saturday 26 February

A guided walk to look for fairy rings, plant fungi, bracket fungi and forest mushrooms etc with Marieka Gryzenhout who has a PhD in Microbiology from Pretoria University. Meet at the Nestlé Environmental Education Centre at the Botanical Garden. Phone Shanka to book.

GRASS IDENTIFICATION

Learn how to identify the many different species of grasses in the Botanical Garden with Karin Spottiswoode. Booking essential - phone Shanka.

A presentation by Herman Staude followed by a walk in the Botanical Garden. Bring along a picnic supper. Booking essential – phone Shanka.

 

WONDERBOOM NATURE RESERVE
Sunday 20 March
09:00

A guided tour of the Reserve with Stan Kantor. As well as the usual Botanical Society fees, there will be an entrance fee to the Reserve of R10 for adults, R7 for children and R4 for pensioners. Booking essential – phone Shanka. Meet at the Reserve at 09:00 or at the Walter Sisulu NBG at 07:30.

On the last Sunday of every month (excluding December)
Come along and browse a wide range of artwork available for sale in a stunning outdoor setting. A percentage of sales go to the Botanical Society's Garden Development Fund.

BAT WALK

Saturday 26 February - 18:00 for 18:30 until approx 21:00

The Bat Interest Group will host a bat walk at the Walter Sisulu NBG on Saturday evening 26 February. Come along and find out more about these fascinating creatures. Bat Detectors and Mist Nets will be used to locate, identify and/or capture Bats. After identification Bats will be released. Bring along a torch.

EASTER PARADE & FAMILY FUN DAY

Monday, 28 March (Family Day) 12-3 pm

Wonderful children's entertainment and fun for the whole family !

Join our Easter Parade with a Marching Band, Easter bunnies and animal characters, starting from the entrance at 12 o'clock. This will be followed by an Easter egg hunt, as well as colouring-in competitions and face-painting. There will be stage entertainment as well as a fancy dress competition with great prizes to be won. All children are encouraged to dress up, join the parade and enter the fancy-dress competition. Bring along your picnic basket, blanket and sun umbrella, as well as any old clothing for a collection for underprivileged adults and children. Entry fee R25 per adult; R15 per senior citizen; R10 per scholar/students; children under 6 free. Botanical Society members: R10 per adult & R5 for scholars/students. TEDDY BEAR'S PICNIC

A special event for the children – loads of fun entertainment and activities with prizes to be won. Enter your Teddy Bear in our competition (categories: the cutest little bear, the great big bear, the best dressed bear and the most loved or “threadbear”. There will also be mom's & dad's competitions, jumping castles, train rides and face painting. Bring along the whole family, a picnic lunch and sun umbrella. Don't forget your “spare bear” for donation to . Activities run from 12 noon – 3 pm. Adults R25, Senior Citizens R15; Scholars & Students R10, Botanical Society members R10. Children under 6 free. CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT

Join us for a traditional Carols by Candlelight led by the Welsh Male Voice Choir of South Africa. Commencing at 19:00, you are welcome to come along early and bring your picnic.
