autumn/fall winter summer spring
Spring at Harold Porter NBG

September and October are our spring months. Much of our richly diverse flora are flowering at this time, making it an ideal time for a flower show. See our What's On page for details.

The weather is changeable - so bring a warm jersey and waterproofs - you may need them.

Mimetes cucullatus
Many proteas and ericas are flowering now, as are many geophytes and interesting endemics such as Mimetes cucullatus.

Look out, too, for the tiny, charming, and superbly coloured Orange-Breasted Sunbird which is a fynbos endemic. The photograph shows the male of the species sitting on Brunia albiflora, another endemic.

From our upper paths you may even see whales out in the bay !
