NBI Libraries and Information Services

Looking for information on southern African plants and related topics?  Try our libraries.

The National Botanical Institute has two main libraries, The Mary Gunn Library in Pretoria and the Harry Molteno Library at Kirstenbosch in Cape Town.   They rank among the biggest botanical libraries in the southern hemisphere and are a valuable resource for information on Southern African flora and related topics.   There are ten small departmental libraries.

The mission of the NBI libraries is to meet the information needs of all NBI staff and to address a public demand for comprehensive, easily accessed information on the plants of southern Africa.

The libraries would like to provide more plant information online.  Please let us know what topics you would like to see covered on an expanded website.   Email

Holdings of the two main libraries are listed on SACD and items may be borrowed via SA Interlending. We hope to be able to make our catalogue of holdings available on-line soon.
